Starting something new can feel overwhelming, especially if tabletop role-playing games are unfamiliar. These are some of the most common questions families ask before joining a Wayfarer’s Hearth group.

What is a tabletop role-playing game?
Tabletop role-playing games, or TTRPGs, are collaborative storytelling games where players take on the roles of characters and go on adventures together. Players use imagination, problem-solving, teamwork, and a set of game rules to decide what their characters do and discover what happens next.
Is this a good fit for my child/teen?
Wayfarer's Hearth is designed for kids and teens ages 8–18 who enjoy stories, games, imagination, problem-solving, or creating characters and worlds. Students do not need to be outgoing, experienced role-players, or already familiar with tabletop games. Groups are formed with age and maturity in mind, with flexibility for different communication styles, comfort levels, and ways of participating.
My child has never played before.
Is that OK?
Absolutely! Many students join with little or no tabletop role-playing experience. Every group is beginner-friendly, and I teach the rules as we play.
What tabletop games do you play?
Dungeons & Dragons, Shadowdark, and Daggerheart are the primary systems I use. Each offers a different style of play, and I choose the system that best fits the age group, program goals, and type of adventure we're playing.
Sessions & Participation
What happens during a typical session?
Most sessions begin with a quick recap and check-in before jumping back into the adventure. Students work together to make decisions, solve puzzles, interact with characters, explore, and face challenges or combat based on the choices they make. We finish with a brief check-in about how the session went and anything the group wants to carry into the next session.
Do students have to act or roleplay?
No! Students are never required to act, use a character voice, or perform. I encourage them to participate in ways that feel comfortable while gently giving them opportunities to build confidence over time.
What if my child is shy?
That's completely okay. Every student has their own comfort level, and I meet them where they are. Students can participate by speaking, using chat, giving simple signals like a thumbs-up or nod, or letting another player help communicate an idea. As they become more comfortable with the group, I gently encourage them to participate in new ways without forcing them into the spotlight.
How are groups put together?
Groups are kept small, with no more than six students, and are formed with age, maturity, group dynamics, and individual needs in mind. If friends or classmates sign up together, I can also work to keep them together when appropriate. The goal is to create an adventuring party where students can feel comfortable, participate, and enjoy playing together.
Online Play & Safety
What do we need to participate online?
Students need a reliable internet connection, a computer, microphone, and speakers or headphones. A webcam is strongly encouraged. Depending on the game, we may also use platforms such as Zoom, Roll20, or an online character creator. I provide families with the links and setup information they need before the first session.
What is a session zero?
Before the first adventure begins, we hold a Session Zero where students meet one another, learn how the game works, establish group expectations, discuss safety tools and boundaries, and make sure everyone is ready to play together.
Are cameras required?
Yes. Cameras are required during sessions. Being able to see one another helps students build connections and allows me to better support engagement and group interaction. I understand that being on camera can feel uncomfortable at first, especially when joining a new group. I work with students as they get comfortable and build confidence participating with the group.
How do you create a safe environment?
Safety begins with clear expectations, respect, and open communication. During Session Zero, I introduce the group's safety tools and establish boundaries for play. Students have ways to pause or redirect the game if something becomes uncomfortable, and I actively monitor the table to make sure everyone has space to participate. Parents are always welcome to contact me privately with questions or concerns.
Can parents observe?
Parents do not typically observe regular group sessions. Having an adult present can change how students interact with one another, and I also want to respect the privacy and comfort of every student at the table.
I understand wanting to know what your child is doing and how they are participating, so I'm happy to answer questions or discuss concerns outside of game time. If you're interested in playing alongside your child, I also offer parent/child and family game options.
Programs & Registration
Can I use my Step Up Scholarship?
Yes! Wayfarer's Hearth is an approved Step Up For Students provider. Eligible Wayfarer's Hearth programs can be paid for using qualifying scholarship funds. Because eligibility and covered services may vary by scholarship and program, please reach out if you're unsure whether a specific group or camp qualifies.
How do I register?
Join the waitlist through the homepage, and I'll reach out personally to discuss current openings, your student's needs and interests, and which available group may be the best fit.
Can siblings or friends join together?
Absolutely. If siblings, friends, or classmates want to play together, I'm happy to build a group around them when scheduling and group size allow.
What if my child has accommodations or unique learning needs?
Every student approaches play and learning differently. I offer multiple ways to participate and can adapt things like communication, pacing, instructions, and how students interact with the game when appropriate. If your child has specific needs that may affect their experience at the table, please reach out so we can talk about what helps them feel comfortable and included.
What if we aren't sure this is the right fit?
That's completely okay. Finding the right group matters. I'm happy to talk with you about your student, answer questions, or schedule a one-time introductory game so you can get a feel for Wayfarer's Hearth before committing to an ongoing group.
