Frequently Asked Questions
Starting something new can feel overwhelming, especially if tabletop role-playing games are unfamiliar. These are some of the most common questions families ask before joining a Wayfarer’s Hearth group.

What is a tabletop role-playing game?
Table-Top Role Playing Games, or TTRPG's, are collaborative storytelling games where players take on the roles of characters to go on adventures, using imagination and simple rules to determine the outcome of their actions.
Is this a good fit for my child/teen?
Who is the program designed for? Age range, maturity, homeschool families, neurodeiverse learners, etc
My child has never played before.
Is that OK?
Absolutely! Most students join with little or no tabletop role-playing experience. Every group is beginner-friendly, and we teach the rules as we play.
What tabletop games do you play?
Dungeons and Dragons, Shadowdark, and Daggerheart are the primary systems we use. Each can be adjusted to match the type of story the students want to tell.
Sessions & Participation
What happens during a typical session?
Every session starts with a recap of the previous week, create a game plan for current session, then work through any encounters, puzzles, or combat as a result of choices made. We end each meeting with a check in on how session went for them.
Do students have to act or roleplay?
No! They are not required to. We encourage students to participate in ways that feel comfortable while gently building confidence over time.
What if my child is shy?
Each student has their own comfort level and we will meet them where they are. Messaging the group or physical cues (thumbs up/nods) are a few of the ways we help students feel safe enough to participate.
How are groups put together?
Students are grouped with age and maturity level in mind. If a group of friends/classmates sign up together, then we will run them as their own adventuring party.
Online Play & Safety
What do we need to participate online?
Access to the internet, computer, microphone and speakers are a must. Webcam is strongly encouraged and recommended. Additionally, we use Roll20, Zoom, and a character creator depending on the game being played. All of these are free for the student and should be downloaded prior to the first session.
What is a session zero?
Before the first adventure begins, we hold a Session Zero where students meet one another, learn how the game works, establish group expectations, and discuss safety tools and table guidelines.
Are cameras required?
Cameras are encouraged because they help students build connections and allow me to better support engagement and group interaction. If there are accessibility or comfort concerns, we can discuss options together.
How do you create a safe environment?
Respect and inclusion are our top priority, which helps ensure the table expectations are followed. We will use safety tools (discussed and decided on during Session zero) and practice open communication with the table. I am also always available to the parents via email for any questions or concerns.
Can parents observe?
During regular sessions, no. I understand the desire to know what your kid is doing while we meet. Just as with school or other gatherings, parents present can lead to distraction or students deferring to them instead of making the call for themselves.If you are interested in being present while your student plays, or are interested in learning to play or play alongside your student, I am happy to discuss other gameplay options as I offer and run parent/child games as well.

Can I use my Step Up Scholarship?
Yes! Wayfarer's Hearth is an approved Step Up For Students provider. Currently, our Elective Courses are covered and accepted for our school year and summer camp options. If you have any questions or need assistance, please reach out.
How do I register?
Join the Waitlist from our homepage, and I'll personally reach out to discuss current openings and the group that may be the best fit.
Can siblings or friends join together?
Of course. If there is a friend or sibling group that wants to play together, I am happy to build a group around them.
What if my child has accommodations or unique learning needs?
We acknowledge that every student learns and approaches play and learning differently. Our goal is always to meet them where they are to have the best time they can. If there are specific considerations, we are happy to connect with you.
What if we aren't sure this is the right fit?
That's completely okay. Choosing the right group matters, and I'm happy to schedule a conversation or a one-time introductory game so you can decide whether Wayfarer's Hearth feels like the right fit.
